Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities

The sustainable development of cities plays a vital role in development of the nations as these offer opportunities for people to prosper economically and socially. The urbanization has resulted into creation of new jobs & opportunities and reduction in poverty. Urban spaces can overcome challenges of rapid growth by improving resource use and focusing on reducing pollution and poverty including provisions to provide access to basic services, energy, housing and simultaneously reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. SDG 11 has 10 targets to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. A total of 17 indicators have been identified in State Indicator Framework to measure and monitor the progress of targets.


Facts and figures

  • 12.13 percent of urban population living in slums, informal Settlements or Inadequate Housing as per Census-2011.
  • Death Rate (Per 1, 00,000 No. of people killed /injured in Road Accident) in road accidents is 12.62 percentage in 2021.
  • 100 percent of wards with door to door waste collection in urban in 2019-20.
  • 44 Cities have waste management and sewage treatment plants and capacity is 969.18 (in MLD) in 2021 as per RUDSICO.
